Jagran or Mata ki Chowki

An evening Chowki or an all-night Jagran for the Goddess: the darbar, the night and the neighbours.

Two to four weeks before

Choose a Chowki (an evening of 2 to 4 hours) or a Jagran (through the night until the dawn aarti)
Book the jagran party and ask what they bring: singers, musicians, jhanki artists, sound
Agree the timings, the offering and travel in writing
Check the local rules for loudspeakers late at night, and take permission where needed
Tell your neighbours, or better, invite them

The week before

Plan Mata’s darbar: the place for the photo or murti, flowers and decoration
Book the tent, seating and lighting if it is outdoors, with a backup for power
Buy the chunari, flowers, coconut and prasad items your family offers

On the day

Set up the jot (lamp) and the darbar before the singers arrive
For a Jagran: plan tea and snacks through the night, and a quiet room where elders can rest
Keep everything ready for the closing aarti
Serve prasad after the aarti

After

Thank the jagran party and settle their offering
Clear the street or common area before morning
